4. Thesis Workshop  Thesis statement: The thesis statement is a single sentence that expresses the whole idea the essay is to develop. The thesis is to the whole paper what a topic sentence is to a paragraph. A good thesis is:  Restricted  Unified  Precise  Restricted - the sentence is narrow enough to be covered in the space available/  Unified - the sentence has only one dominant idea to prove.  Precise - phrasing that permits only one interpretation. There should be no vague words like interesting, great, colorful, fantastic.
