What is Biomass?  Renewable energy source  A biological material from living, or recently living organisms  Can be used directly, or converted into other energy products such a biofuel.  Derived from five distinct energy sources: garbage, wood, waste, landfill gases, and alcohol fuels.

Source of biomass

 Biomass used for electricity production ranges by region.  Forest by-products, such as wood residues, are popular in the US. Agricultural waste is common in Mauritius (sugar cane residue)  Animal husbandry residues, such as poultry litter, are popular in the UK. Use of biomass

 Biomass is plant matter used to generate electricity with steam turbines or produce heat, usually by direct combustion.  Examples are forest residues (like dead trees, branches and tree stumps), yard clippings, wood chips and municipal solid waste. Plants & animals

 Biomass includes plant or animal matter that can be converted in fibers or other industrial chemicals including biofuels.  Industrial biomass can grow from many kinds of plants:  Miscanthus  Switchgrass  Corn  Willow  Sugarcane  Variety of tree species  Eucalyptus to oil palm (palm oil).

 Waste energy is the second largest source of biomass energy.  Main contributors of waste energy are municipal solid waste, manufacturing waste, and landfill gas.  Biomass alcohol fuel, or ethanol, is derived primarily from sugarcane and corn. It can be used directly as a fuel or as an additive to gasoline. Waste energy

 Biomass can be changed into other usable forms of energy like methane gas or transportation fuels like ethanol and biodiesel.  Rotting garbage, and agricultural and human waste, release methane gas (landfill/biogas).  Crops like corn and sugar cane can be generated to produce ethanol.  Biodiesel can be produced from leftover food products like vegetable oils and animal fats Can biomass be changed?

Is it really environmentally friendly?  Biomass as fuel produces air pollution in the form:  carbon monoxide  nitrogen oxides  volatile organic compounds  particulates and others…

 Biomass power generate industry in the US produces about 1.4% of the US electricity supply  The New Hope Power Partnership is the largest biomass power plant in North America.  Facility uses sugar cane fiber (bagasse) and recycled urban wood as fuel to generate enough power for its large milling and refining operations  Supply renewable electricity for nearly 60, 000 homes  Recycling sugar cane and wood waste, it preserves landfill space in urban communities in Florida. Use of biomass in US

 Wood energy is derived both from direct use of harvested wood as a fuel and from wood waste streams.  Largest source of energy from wood is pulping liquor or “black liquor,” a waste product from processes of the pulp, paper and paperboard industry. Wood Energy
