What Do You Mean by “Impaired” ? Inability to care for patients with reasonable skill or safety as a consequence of: The misuse or abuse of alcohol or drugs Mental or emotional illness Burnout Inappropriate behavior

Impairment and the Medical Professional 10-15% experience problems with alcohol, other drugs, or mental illness at some time during their lives. Studies among U.S. physicians have concluded that impairment of functioning due to chemical dependence alone affects from 8-12% (expected that prevalence is similar for other health care providers)
