Content Area Subject: History Grade Level: 3rd Summary: The purpose of the lesson is for the students to know the similarities and differences of the Earths major bodies of water. In this lesson the students will be able list, label, and identify them on a map. Learning Objectives: Given a list of the oceans, worksheets, handouts pictures, and maps the students should be able to identify the major bodies of waters that are on an atlas, globes, or maps at 100% by the end of the year. They need to at least make an 80 out of 100% on their charts. Content Standards/Grade Level Expectations: 3.3.spi.8. differentiate the distinguishing characteristics of ecosystems (i.e.,
3
Content Area deserts, grasslands, rainforests). 3.3.spi.9. recognize the identifying characteristics of certain geographic features (i.e., peninsula, islands, continents, mountains, rivers, deserts, oceans, and forests). Performance Indicator:. 3.3.tpi.2. create a map of neighborhood or city using components of our earth's system (e.g., water, lake, park, mountain or hill). NETS*S Standard: Select and apply digital tools to collect, organize, and analyze data to evaluate theories or test hypotheses. (3,4,6) Accomplishments: Develop an initial understanding of the oceans.

Ocean Facts Pacific: The name "Pacific" come from the Latin word: "pacificus" which means peaceful. So Pacific Ocean means peaceful ocean. The Pacific Ocean is the biggest ocean of the world and covers more than 30% of the Earth's surface. The lowest known point on earth is called Challenger Deep and is located in the Pacific Ocean near Guam in the Philippine Sea and. The depth recorded is 10,920m or 35,827 feet. The ring of fire is also located in the Pacific Ocean The largest coral reef in the world is located off the Australian coast and is called the Great Barrier Reef. Atlantic: The Atlantic Ocean is about half the size of the Pacific Ocean and covers roughly 20% of the Earth's surface The Atlantic is the second biggest ocean in the world and is between the continents of America and Europe and Africa.

Ocean Facts Indian: The Indian Ocean is located between Africa and Austral-Asia. The Coelacanth is found in the warm waters off the Comoro islands between Mozambique and Madagascar. Every day tankers are carrying a cargo of 17 million barrels of crude oil from the Persian Gulf on its waters. The Northern Indian Ocean also is the most important transport route for oil as it connects the oil-rich countries of the Middle East Each with Asia. Arctic: The Lion's mane jellyfish can also be found in the Arctic Ocean's waters. It grows up to 2.4m or 8 feet across and lives on plankton and fishes There are many polar bears living on the Arctic ice. The Arctic Ocean is located around the North Pole across the Arctic circle. Many Arctic ground features are named after early Arctic explorers, like Nansen Basin or Mendeleyev Ridge.

Conclusion In this lesson the students learned about the different oceans. Each student would be able to learn facts about them and answer questions on the facts that are in the beginning of this lesson. This lesson was really good for students to see what they can find in each of the oceans. This is a good lesson to compare and contrast the different oceans. This is a great way for students to understand how out oceans work and what they can do to keep it cleaner and take care of it. In this lesson the students will be able to answer questions that I feel are vital to our topic water. This is a fun activity because it tests students memorization and to see how well they were paying attention to the facts I listed at the beginning of this presentation.
