English Conversation Practice: The U.S. 2010 Census Blair and Donna are having a conversation about mail they received from the United States Census Bureau. ESLamerica.US
3
census The census is a count of people living in the U.S. This happens every 10 years and is required by the Constitution.
4
bureau A bureau is a part of the government.
5
the least I can do The least I can do is a small thing I can do to help.
6
Donna: Hey, did you get something in the mail from the U.S. Census Bureau? Blair: Yeah, but I didn’t understand it. Donna: What did it say? Blair: It said something about filling out a form and mailing it promptly. What does “promptly” mean? Donna: “Promptly” means right away or as soon as you can. Blair: Why does the government want information from me? Donna: This information helps them to know what our community needs like schools, hospitals and streets. Blair: OK then. I guess I’ll fill it out. Donna: Me too. Besides, if we mail it in, they won’t need to send a Census worker to my home to help me. Blair: I guess that’s the least we can do.
