11 HAZMAT Storage MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) MREs (Meals Ready to Eat)  The heating component is hazardous material if the MRE package has been opened and the heating unit not used.  After they have been discharged (adding water) they are no longer hazardous and can be thrown away.  Do not bring unused heating units back to the home facility.
