Science Fair Project How do I get from the beginning to the end? A Step by Step guide by Mrs. Amadi and Ms.Gilreath

State the problem/Question Which fertilizer helps the seeds grow faster?

Hypothesis Remember to use If/Then Statements: Example 1: If we use the three fertilizers, then fertilizer A will cause the plants to grow faster. Example 2: Example: If all conditions remain the same for each plant then Fertilizer A will grow the plant faster

List your Materials 4 pots 4 seeds Fertilizer A, Fertilizer B, and Fertilizer C Soil Water Sunlight Spoon Ruler for measurement Measuring Cup

Identify the Variables Independent Variable- Fertilizer Dependent Variable- Plant Height Constant Variables- Seeds, water, pots, soil, location of pots, temperature, amount of sunlight

Groups Control groups- What you use as a comparison. The control group is the group with no fertilizer. Experimental Group- The groups with fertilizer A, B, and C.

Procedures Step 1: Gather the materials (what you listed under your material section). Step 2: Label the pots as follows: Pot A, Pot B, Pot C, and Pot D. Pot D will not contain any fertilizer. Step 3: Measure one cup of soil and put in pot A, pot B, pot C, and pot D. Step 4: Place one teaspoon of fertilizer A in pot A and mix

Procedures Step 5: Place one teaspoon of fertilizer B in pot B and mix Step 6: Place one teaspoon of fertilizer C in pot C and mix Step 7: Place no fertilizer in pot D Step 8: Use spoon to dig a 1 in hole in each of the pots the place a seed in the hole and cover. Step 9: Place your pots in designated area.

Procedures Step 10: Measure 10 mL of water and water the seeds weekly. Step 11: Using your ruler measure the height of plant growth and record your data. Step 12: Repeat your experiment nine times

Conclusion The gardener realized after using Fertilizer A, B, C, and no fertilizer; that Fertilizer B grew the seeds the tallest and fastest. According to the data collected by the gardener the seeds grew zero centimeters after week one. In weeks 2 and 3 the results showed that the seeds we planted with Fertilizer B grew the tallest followed by Fertilizer A. Fertilizer C and no fertilizer were tied in last place.

Conclusion Continued Starting in weeks 4 and 5 the seeds started to sprout at an increasing rate. Fertilizer B still shows the highest potential at 13 cm in week 4 and 18 cm in week 5. Fertilizer A grew from week 4 to week 5, but still did not reach the height of Fertilizer B. As the gardeners observations continued they discovered that every week the pot with Fertilizer B continued to grow higher than the other seeds

Final Conclusion Finally at week 8, which was the last week of observation, Fertilizer B grew a total of 39 cm. Fertilizer A had a total of 35 cm, Fertilizer C had grown 22 cm, and the control group with no fertilizer grew to 20 cm at the end of observation. The results clearly showed that the seed planted with Fertilizer B had the highest growth potential.

The question to my experiment was which fertilizer helps the seeds grow faster. My hypothesis was “If we use the three fertilizers, then fertilizer A will cause the plants to grow faster.” After conducting my experiment I found that my hypothesis was incorrect because Fertilizer B grew the fastest. According to my data the seeds grew a total of 35 cm with Fertilizer A, 39 cm with Fertilizer B, 22 cm with Fertilizer C, and my control group with no fertilizer had 20 cm.

During my experiment I experienced some flaws in my design. I did not water the plant as regularly as they needed. The science involved in my experiment seed germination. Seed germination is the process by which seeds sprout as the likeness of a baby growing. Fertilization is the process by which an outside organism provides nutrients to help the seed germinate and grow. This experiment helps society by allowing us to discover which fertilizers help grow the plants fastest and tallest. This benefits society by allowing more crops and plants to be used for production and human consumption. Gardeners all over the world will know to use Fertilizer B

New Related Question If I have to conduct the experiment again I would investigate what would happen if I use different types of soil with different types of Fertilizers.
