Word Level Stress What are the three thing you hear that help indicate stress? 1. Longer 2. Louder 3. Higher

Rules and Practice (review) 90% of 2-syllable English nouns have first syllable stress “Cell phone” *Put the stress on the _____ syllable/noun in one-word and two-word compound nouns. What about 2-syllable compound adverbs of location? “Upstairs” *Put the stress on the _____ syllable in compound adverbs. What about phrases with an adjective + noun? “Green house” vs. “Greenhouse” *Stress is on _____ syllables in “adjective + noun” phrases. What about verbs? “Present” (noun) vs. “Present” (verb) *Put the stress on the_____ syllable in two-syllable verbs that are also used as nouns.

Let’s Practice! No E-mail Fridays: To encourage face to face communication, some offices have a “no email Fridays” policy. On Fridays, all messages are delivered in person. Directions: Work in small groups. Choose one speaker Speaker- read the email to yourself, you can make notes, then turn it over. Tell your classmates what was in the email. Pay attention to syllables and word stress! Listeners: Take notes on the important information. If you don’t understand, ask questions Compare your notes with the original email How did you do?

Syllables For a lot of languages: A syllable = Consonant + Vowel English is a little different. We can have CV, CVC, CCVC, CCCV, CCCVC, CCCVCC! Also, just because you see a vowel, doesn’t mean you should add a syllable: Passage Smile Dance ***Listen for a vowel sound.

Stress in longer words Last week, we used parts of speech to predict word stress. Today, we are going to look at suffixes or word endings as predictors. Why are they different? Let’s watch the short history of the English Language. Well Said, Pg. 69 -ment, -able, -er = affect stress? Yes or No? -ic, -ity, -ion = affect stress? Yes or No? -ee = affect stress? Yes or No?
