Monitors Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) –Most common type of monitor –Electrons fired from the back –Electrons excite phosphor to glow –Phosphor is arranged in dots called pixels –Dot mask ensures proper pixel is lit –3 Electron beams for colored CRTs –A pixel contain 3 phosphors for colored CRTS –Shadow mask used to align electron beams

CRT color –Phosphor dots arranged in triads –Red, green, and blue dots –Three colors blend to make colors –Varying the intensity creates new colors

Monitors Raster Scan The beam paints one line across the screen from left to right. It then quickly flies back to the left side, moves down slightly and paints another horizontal line, and so on down the screen, like this:

Monitor horizontal retrace - the beam moving back to the left at the end of each line vertical retrace - movement from bottom to top.

Passive matrix LCD –Pixels arranged in a grid –Pixels are activated indirectly Row and column are activated –Animation can be blurry

Monitors Active matrix LCD –Each pixel is activated directly –Pixels have 4 transistors One each for red, green, blue One for opaqueness –Transistors arranged in a thin film –Animation is crisp and clean

Monitors Drawbacks to LCD –More expensive than CRT –Must sit directly in front of screen –Can be more fragile than CRT

Monitors Paper-white displays –High contrast between fore and background Electro-luminescent displays (ELD) –Similar to LCD –Uses phosphor to produce light Plasma monitor –Gas is excited to produce light

Monitors Ports –VGA Port Because most CRT monitors require the signal information in analog form and not digital, they typically use an analog connection.

Monitors and Video Cards More Details regarding LCDs –Brightness or Luminance –Contrast Ratio The contrast ratio rates the degree of difference of an LCD monitor's ability to produce bright whites and the dark blacks. Good LCDs have a ratio of 20000:1 –Response Rate The response rate indicates how fast the monitor's pixels can change colors.

Components of a Video Card –GPU A GPU is a dedicated processor optimized for accelerating graphics. The processor is designed specifically to perform floating point calculations, which are fundamental to 3D graphics rendering. –Video BIOS The video BIOS or firmware contains the basic program, which is usually hidden, that governs the video card's operations and provides the instructions that allow the computer and software to interact with the card.

Video Cards –Video memory The memory capacity of most modern video cards ranges from 128 MB to 4 GB –RAMDAC Random Access Memory Digital-to-Analog Converter, converts digital signals to analog signals for use by a computer display that uses analog inputs such as CRT displays. –Outputs
