Lesson 1 - Goal Setting 4 This lesson is designed to communicate the importance of goal setting. 4 What are goals and why are they important? 4 How many of you have goals set for your education or careers? 4 Do you know the difference between long-term and short-term goal setting? 4 Short-term goals are those things you must accomplish before you can achieve you long-term goals. 4 Long-term goals are those things that can take three or more years to accomplish. Short-term goals on the other hand can take less than one year to two years to accomplish.

Lesson 1 - Goal Setting 4 Determine which goals listed below are long-term or short-term goals. –Maintaining good attendance in high school. –Complete high school with a B or better average. –Become a member of a sports team. –Graduate from high school with a B or better average. –Apply and get accepted to college or technical school. –Graduate from college with a undergraduate degree. –Attend graduate school –Seek professional employment. 4 Setting goals is fundamental to everything we do in life. 4 We must set goals that attainable, realistic and challenging. 4 ACTIVITY: Establish your personal short-term and long-term goals. –List five each and explain their differences.

Lesson 2 - Image Building 4 Tips For Dressing To Impress –Dress conservatively. –Clothes should be fresh, neat and pressed. –Shoes should be clean and polished. –Do not wear tinted glasses unless they are a prescription. –Jewelry should be conservative- nothing that jingles or attracts attention. –Pay attention to your hair and fingernails. The should be clean, neat and trimmed. –Fragrance - none or not so much that the scent is overpowering or lingers. 4 Identify what you think is proper business attire. –Exercise: The boys in the class must bring in pictures of what they think demonstrates proper business attire for young ladies, and the young ladies must bring in pictures of what you think is improper business attire for young men. –Each group will have to explain the pictures they have selected. –You can demonstrate items such as hairstyles, haircuts, jewelry, shoes, dressing styles, etc.

Lesson 3 - Behavior Modules 4 This lesson is designed to teach students how to feel good about themselves. 4 The three areas of discussion will include: –What is self-esteem? –What is a positive and negative self-esteem? –How to improve your self-esteem, and peer pressure and how to handle it. 4 These modules will be broken up into lesson plans that address the following: –Identify self-esteem. –Why should I think about my self- esteem? –Some factors that influence your self-esteem. –Some common effects of low self- esteem. –How to think positively about yourself. –Self-esteem checklist: Assess you own level of self- esteem. Learn to be be your own best friend. Make your own decisions.

Lesson 3 - Behavior Modules 4 What is self-esteem? –It’s your self-image, or how you feel about yourself. –Your self-esteem is made up of thoughts and feelings you have about yourself. These may be positive, for example: I’m pretty, I’m smart, I learn from my mistakes, I’m fun. –The more positive feelings you have about yourself, the HIGHER YOUR SELF-ESTEEM. –Or examples of negative self- esteem may be I’m ugly, I’m stupid, I’m afraid I will fail, etc. –The more negative feelings you have about yourself, the lower you self-esteem. 4 Some feeling you have about yourself may be difficult to express or explain. That’s because YOU’RE A UNIQUE INDIVIDUAL - - there’s no one else in the world like you. 4 That’s reason enough for you to be PROUD of who you are !

Lesson 3 - Behavior Modules 4 Why should I think about my self- esteem? 4 Because self-esteem affects the way you live: –how you think, act and feel about yourself and others. –How successful you are in achieving your goals in life. –High self-esteem can make you feel effective productive capable loveable –Low self-esteem can make you feel ineffective worthless incompetent unloved Self-esteem can be improved. Don’t let past failures hold you back. YOU owe it to yourself to learn to feel good about who you are !

Lesson 3 - Behavior Modules 4 Factors that influence your self- esteem: –Your level of self-esteem is based on unique experiences and personal relationships. AT HOME - relationships with your parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters, etc. IN SCHOOL - with classmates, teachers, administrators, guidance counselors. Experiences with school work, extracurricular activities, sports, etc. ON THE JOB - with supervisors, co-workers, employees. Experience with hiring, firings, promotions and level of job responsibilities as well as you ability to support yourself. YOUR SOCIAL LIFE - relationships with childhood and adult friends, neighbors, boyfriends and girlfriends. IN SOCIETY - with members of different cultures, races and religions. 4 In general, positive experiences and fulfilling relationships help raise self- esteem. Negative experiences and troubled relationships tend to lower self-esteem 4 No single event or person can determine your level of self-esteem. It develops over time and constantly changes with experience.

Lesson 4 - Behavior Modules 4 The effects of low self-esteem can create a vicious cycle. Some common effects of low self-esteem are: –People with low self-esteem often have little self-confidence in their abilities. –They often think they’re doomed for failure because they have failed in the past. –Lack of self-confidence may result in making little or no effort toward achieving your goals. –Failures that result from lack of effort are not a true measure of a person’s abilities. –We often don’t give ourselves credit for our accomplishments. –Negative people aren’t fun to be around. –People with low self-esteem find it hard to develop close relationships. 4 But the cycle can be BROKEN taking a positive steps to raise your self- esteem. 4 Key words to help you feel good about yourself: –ACCEPTANCE –HELP –TRUST –RESPECT –ENCOURAGEMENT –PRAISE & LOVE

Lesson 4 - Behavior Modules 4 How To Think Positively About Yourself –Make it a point to be your own best friend. –That means give yourself: Acceptance Identify and accept your strengths and weaknesses. Set realistic goals. Meet them by learning new skills and developing your abilities. Take time out to be alone with yourself and your feelings. Get involved in activities that you really enjoy. Pay attention to your thoughts and feelings. Act on what you think is right. Do what makes you feel happy and fulfilled. 4 How To Think Positively About Yourself –Don’t try to be someone you are not. –Be proud of who you are. –Don’t be afraid t explore and appreciate you own special talents. –Adapt a “ can-do” attitude. –Set a reasonable time table for personal goals and offer yourself encouragement along the way. –Take pride in your achievements. –Remember your experiences are yours alone, enjoy them. –Learn to love the unique person your are. –Accept and learn from your mistakes. –Don’t over react to errors. –Accept your successes and failures.
