General Direction/Objectives for SMI Committees in 2011 Technical Development Committee Provide ongoing support for SMI-S spec development Develop a template and process for SMI-S Addenda Support SMI Technical Steering Group (TSG) planning for SMI-S Version 2 development Conformance Committee Release Conformance Testing Program (CTP) 1.5 and start work on CTP 1.6 Get vendors to take a current version of CTP Focus on refinements and SMI-S Addenda after CTP 1.6 Get Client feedback for what would increase CTP value Increase SMI TSG and SMI-Lab involvement with CTP activity
8
Key SMI Goals Help SMI-S implementations catch up SMI-S development slows (but does not stop) after SMI-S 1.6 Transition SMI focus from development to promotion Shift from growing the SMI-S spec to increasing adoption, implementation and compliance (for a consistent ecosystem) Emphasize current CTP results and get users to look for them Foster a consistent SMI-S ecosystem for Clients Encourage Provider vendors to move to a current version of SMI-S Raise the level of SMI-S that Clients can expect to work with Expand SMI to be about storage management in general Support other groups, like Green, SSS, Cloud, etc Maintain focus on SMI-S, while acknowledging that not everything is covered by SMI-S
9
Top Projects Enhance Marketing Activities Maintain current efforts Including interactions with other SNIA groups Plan improvements based upon findings Spec Development Coordination Ensure SMI-S 1.6 is done in expected time frame Initiate activities for developing SMI-S Addenda Coordinate INCITS and ISO interactions SMI-S 1.3 became a new ANSI standard last February SMI-S 1.1 became a new ISO standard last March Ensure on-going feedback from SMI-Lab Plugfests

PCIe SSDs New area of interest for SSSI PCIe SSDs are currently card-based and utilize proprietary O/S drivers Multiple activities ongoing to standardize PCIe SSDs SSD Form Factor Working Group 2.5-inch FF, modified SAS/SATA connector Non Volatile Memory Host Controller Interface (NVMHCI) group NVM Express (NVMe) enables standard O/S driver for Enterprise and Client PCIe SSDs T10 (ANSI/INCITS SAS committee) SCSI over PCIe proposal overlaps NVMe Task force is trying to reconcile competing proposals PCIe SSDs in standard card & HDD form factors with standard O/S drivers will achieve greater market share SSSI will publish regular updates and educational materials to ensure that users understand these important standards
15
SSS Performance Test Specification Main Focus of SSSI & SSS TWG Establishing a standard for measuring the performance of Solid State Storage Devices Current manufacturer specs are based on different assumptions and cannot be fairly compared Specific to NAND Flash-based SSS (SSD) Flash has unique performance characteristics Specific preparation procedure and tests are required to achieve reasonable, repeatable results Split into Enterprise and Client specifications Enterprise PTS in IP review; to be released in June Link to spec posted on www.snia.org/forums/sssiwww.snia.org/forums/sssi Client PTS in development Anticipated to be available for public review in Q3CY2011

SNIA Technical News New Public Review Releases Solid State Storage Performance Test Specification (PTS) Enterprise v1.0 DRAFT The SNIA is developing methods enabling manufacturers to set, and customers to compare, the performance specifications of Solid State Storage (SSS) devices, which are evolving with the state of the technology. This Specification defines a set of device level tests and methodologies to enable comparative testing of Solid State Storage (SSS) devices Cloud Data Management Interface (CDMI) v1.01h DRAFT The Cloud Data Management Interface defines the functional interface that applications will use to create, retrieve, update and delete data elements from the Cloud. As part of this interface the client will be able to discover the capabilities of the cloud storage offering and use this interface to manage containers and the data that is placed in them. In addition, metadata can be set on containers and their contained data elements through this interface.

Storage Developer Conference 2011 Call for Presentations Speak at SDC - Where the Storage Development Community Connects! Conference Dates: September 19 – 22, 2011 Conference Venue: Hyatt Regency Hotel, Santa Clara, CA Now in its eighth year, and again expected to draw more than 250 developers and engineers, the Storage Developer Conference (SDC) is the only event created by storage developers for storage developers.Storage Developer Conference SDC provides the information and know – how to further advance solutions with features that shorten time to market for a developed solution, increase acceptability and interoperability in production environments, and help participants understand where storage technologies are heading. In addition, plans are being finalized for another successful CIFS/SMB/SMB2 plugfest. Share your knowledge and experience as a storage development professional by submitting a presentation for consideration at SDC. If you recently submitted a proposed presentation or tutorial for April ’ s SNW and your presentation fits into one of the topics below, please feel free to submit it again for SDC.
