GRAPHING INEQUALITIES OBJECTIVE: SWBAT WRITE AND GRAPH INEQUALITIES IN ONE VARIABLE
2
REVIEW OF THE SYMBOLS - FOLDABLE FOLD PAPER THE HAMBURGER WAY (ALONG THE LINE IN THE MIDDLE) CUT ALONG THE DOTTED LINE (ONLY THROUGH THE TOP HALF!) PASTE INTO YOUR NOTEBOOK AND GIVE THE PAGE A TITLE WRITE THE SYMBOLS ON THE OUTSIDE FLAPS SO YOUR PAPER LOOKS LIKE THIS
3
DOES ORDER MATTER? IS IT OK TO HAVE THE NUMBER COME BEFORE THE VARIABLE? EX: 5<X? YES! WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? 5 IS LESS THAN ALL THE POSSIBLE X VALUES. IN OTHER WORDS, X MUST BE GREATER THAN 5 USUALLY WE LIKE TO WRITE IT WITH THE VARIABLE FIRST, SO IT WOULD BE X>5 THIS LEADS US TO…. If you ‘flip flop’ the sides of an inequality, you must ‘flip flop’ the inequality symbol too!
4
FIRST DRAW A SMALL CIRCLE OVER THE NUMBER INDICATED IN THE INEQUALITY WHAT TYPE OF CIRCLE? LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO/GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO FILL THE CIRCLE IN LESS THAN/GREATER THAN/NOT EQUAL TO LEAVE THE CIRCLE OPEN 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
5
WHICH DIRECTION TO SHADE? THINK ABOUT WHAT VALUES FOR THE VARIABLE ARE POSSIBLE, AND SHADE ALL THOSE VALUES IF YOUR INEQUALITY IS IN VARIABLE-SYMBOL-NUMBER ORDER GREATER THAN/GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO SHADE RIGHT LESS THAN/LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO SHADE LEFT NOT EQUAL TO SHADE BOTH 4 5 6 7 8 9 10

EXAMPLES

WRITING INEQUALITIES FROM A GRAPH FIRST WRITE YOUR VARIABLE DOWN LEAVE A SPACE FOR THE SYMBOL AND THEN WRITE THE NUMBER WHERE THE CIRCLE IS LOCATED LOOK AT WHICH DIRECTION IT IS SHADED LEFT LESS THAN RIGHT GREATER THAN BOTH NOT EQUAL TO -12 -11 -10 -9 -8 -7 -6 x -9 < LOOK TO SEE IF THE CIRCLE IS OPEN OR CLOSED OPEN LEAVE THE SYMBOL ALONE CLOSED ADD THE “OR EQUAL TO” LINE BELOW THE SYMBOL

EXAMPLES: 1. 2. 3. 4. 13 1415 16 17 18 19 -3 -2-1 0 1 2 3 45 5060 70 80 90 100 137 138 139 140 141 142 143 WRITE THE INEQUALITY SHOWN ON THE NUMBER LINE
