Analysis of Informational Text Chemistry and its relationship to NANOTECHNOLOGY Nanoparticles, Medical Research, Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Cancer Research, High Technology Industries Chemistry Article Review #3 Recall, Skill Concept. Strategic Thinking, Extended Thinking
2
What details are important? Topic – NANOTECHNOLOGY Length of article (1page/hand length) from a Journal Topics to Consider – Nanoparticles, Medical Research, Tissue Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Cancer Research, High Technology Industries Where can I obtain a JOURNAL article QVHS Library online database Gale Science in Context or Gale Global Issues in Context Username and Password = quaker OR Any Print – Web Online Journal
3
Information needed to create a citation in NoodleTools Citation Type = Database / Journal ; Print / Journal ; Web/Journal Quick Cite Citation feature – Copy and Paste from the source ANNOTATION – in the annotation field Discuss/explain the author(s) and or journal expertise as related to the topic. This may take some additional research.

Close Reading Strategies Close Reading Strategies when reading scholarly text Number the paragraphs- to cite and refer to the text. One simple way to do this is by numbering each paragraph, section or stanza in the left hand margin. Chunk the text - faced with a full page of text, reading it can quickly become overwhelming. Break it up the text into smaller sections (or chunks) by drawing a horizontal line between paragraphs to divide the page into smaller sections. Underline and circle… with a purpose- underline and circle very specific things. Think about what information you have been asked to take from the text – ie main idea, fact. Left margin: What is the author SAYING? - This is where chunking comes into play. In the left margin, summarize each chunk in 10-words or less. Right margin: Dig deeper into the text - Use a power verb to describe what the author is DOING. (For example: Describing, illustrating, arguing,) Ask questions.

Document the person(s)who attribute the fact (Parenthetical/ In-Text Reference) Explain the significance of each fact as it is related to Chemistry and Nanotechnology.

Academic Integrity Direct Quote, Paraphrase, My Ideas PARAPHRASE CARD – English Language Arts What information do you need from the article: IN YOUR OWN WORDS Read the article and write at least a paragraph identifying Main idea –what specifically does the author need for you to know about the topic. Who (person, place or organization) is the article about? Why did the author write the article – About what, is the author trying to inform, educate, explain, or present research? Paraphrase the 2 facts from above (something known) making each a significant part of the writing.

Academic Integrity Direct Quote, Paraphrase, My Ideas MY IDEAS CARD-Personal Connection – English Language Arts IN YOUR OWN WORDS Write atleast a paragraph New - Why is Nanotechnology important to the future? Explain the value of NanoTech in terms of ones own experiences. How does or could the author deal with the concept that nanotechnology will change how educators focus on chemistry in schools and universities.
