Churches, museums and galleries in abundance can be found in Florence. It's quite a busy place but there's a good public transport system; most attractions are well within walking distance. The most striking monument is the green, white and red Duomo; like most of the Italian churches it is adorned with some wonderful artwork, particularly around the 15th century dome, or Duomo. Working your way through the streets of Florence you cross the river and soon come to the Palazzo Pitti, the palace of the Medici family who made Florence the centre for the Renaissance, and one of the largest buildings in the town. The Ponte Vecchio is the only bridge in Florence to survive World War II and now it is lined with jewellers and goldsmiths, with the odd china shop and ice-cream shop mixed in. There are many small shops to explore and Florence is certainly a place that you can wander around in and find quaint and interesting buildings and monuments.

Places I Would Prefer The Ponte Vecchio, this bridge and its picturesque huddle of overhanging shops was built in 1345 and its shops once included butchers, grocers and blacksmiths all now replaced by expensive jewellery shops. Don't miss a visit to the Uffizi Gallery where you will find the magnificent statue of David by Michelangelo, a sign of freedom for the city of Florence, or a the view of the city from the Piazza del Michelangelo across the River Arno.
