It all starts with a Question! What do you want to know? In the question you must identify the keyword which is the main subject of the question and the name of the article that you want to look up.

Keywords For example: What is the keyword in this question? When do raccoons usually hunt? raccoons

Keywords What is the keyword in this question? What is the largest island in the world? Island

Keywords What is the keyword in this question? What kind of cactus grows taller than a house? Cactus After you decide what the keyword is, you must determine where you will find the answer to the question.

Alphabetically Use Guide Words How is the information in an encyclopedia arranged? Encyclopedia Arrangement

Which volume of the encyclopedia would you find another name for Apatosaurus? Volume 1 or A Encyclopedia Arrangement

Index The index is an alphabetical list of the topics in a book. It is usually found at the back of a book. In an encyclopedia with more than one volume, an index of all the topics in the whole encyclopedia often will be found in a volume of its own and is usually the last volume.

Some entries include subheads. A subhead is a topic that usually has something to do with the main index entry. Dodge Brothers (American businessman) D:260 Automobile (The Dodge Brothers) A:965 Index

Review What is the most important word in a question called? Keyword What reference book has many volumes and contains basic information about most topics? Encyclopedia How are the articles arranged in an encyclopedia? Alphabetically

Review How do we find the article we want in the encyclopedia? Use guide words and look it up alphabetically or Use the index What does the L stand for in L:240 from the index? Volume What does the 240 tell you? Page number How might you find more information on your topic? Look in the index.
