Thomas Hoover Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer Desktop Virtualization

Virtual Desktop Initiative at UTC What is desktop virtualization? A thin client device can be used instead of a full size computer. The thin client remotely connects to a server and displays the Windows 7 operating system on the thin client device connected to a monitor. Thin Client Device Why desktop virtualization? Less money (48% cheaper than PC) Less energy ( more than 89% more energy efficient) Easier to manage and maintain Most people are just using Microsoft Office products and surfing the web

Virtual Desktop Initiative at UTC Cost Containment Strategy - Reducing desktop costs allow IT to redirect money to classroom technology and address greater IT needs -Better utilization of limited resources -Less staff can manage more machines -Total cost per device $632.83 (This includes device, license, and servers) -Savings per device versus a PC $567.17

Where Deployed o Academic Computing Labs o Classroom computers in the podium o Conference Rooms connected to large television screens o Library Computing lab o Residential Living Areas

The Future (Expansion Plans) Areas we are looking to implement: o Virtualize 1/3 of our public labs (500 out of 1500 public computers) o Use virtual desktops in new UTC library o More widely install as classroom computer in the podium o Replace general use computers (general kiosks) with virtual machines o Replace campus operators computers o Replace Bursar's Office walk up computers and possible staff machines o Staff use throughout the university
