All Rights Reserved4 C H A P T E R 13 Downloading Text from the Internet  The quickest way to download text from the Internet is to copy the text onto your computer’s clipboard, from which you can paste the text into any other window on your screen.  Both Netscape Communicator and the Microsoft Internet Explorer let you copy text onto your computer’s clipboard.

All Rights Reserved5 C H A P T E R 13 Downloading Images from the Internet  The quickest way to download an image from the Internet is to use your Web browser’s option for saving the image to a file. When you save the image to a file, you will have the option of changing its name.  If you change the filename, make sure that you keep the same filename extension.

You right-click instead of left-click on the link that triggers the audio or video, and the Save As dialog appears.

All Rights Reserved7 C H A P T E R 13 Downloading Software and Data from the Internet  To download software and data from the Internet, you should begin by reading any special instructions that might appear on screen.  Almost all of these instructions fall into one of three categories: documents, archived files, and self-extracting archives.

All Rights Reserved8 C H A P T E R 13 Downloading Software and Data from the Internet  Documents - To download the document that your Web browser is currently displaying, you pull down the browser’s File menu, choose Save As, and use the Save dialog to save the file to a folder on your computer’s hard drive.

All Rights Reserved9 C H A P T E R 13 Downloading Software and Data from the Internet  Archived Files - An archive is a container into which one or more files has been compressed to save space and packed into a single file that can be transmitted easily over a network.  When you receive such a file, you need to use an extractor to unpack the archive and restore its contents onto your computer.

Their product, PKZIP for Windows, takes its name from the.zip filename extension that archived files normally have on Windows-based machines.

All Rights Reserved11 C H A P T E R 13 Downloading Software and Data from the Internet  Stuffit Expander - On the Macintosh, archives are handled with a freeware program from Aladdin Systems called Stuffit Expander, which is also available for Windows. True to its name, Stuffit Expander can extract files from archives you download from the Internet.

All Rights Reserved12 C H A P T E R 13 Downloading Software and Data from the Internet  Self-extracting Archives - A self- extracting archive is a compressed file into which the files that comprise an application or set of data have been packed. You download the archive file to your computer. Then you run the archive, which unpacks the files and stores them on your computer.

All Rights Reserved13 C H A P T E R 13 Safeguarding Against Viruses  Whenever you download files from the Internet, you should run a virus scan on your computer to make sure you have not received a virus.  If the file is coming from a reputable site, such as Microsoft or Netscape or CNET download.com, the file is most probably virus-free.
