3 Study Away Events – Fall 2014 l September 29 – Broad Overview of process and programs l Wednesday, October 1 from 7-8 pm in Craig: Financing Study Away l Thursday, October 2 from 4-6:30 in Peters: Study Away Fair (including international winter term group projects) l Beginning Monday, October 6: Weekly information sessions on application process details

4 Oberlin’s Study Away Options for semester-long programs Two Oberlin categories for studying away: 1. Enrolled Not in Residence (ENR) 2. Academic Leave of Absence (ALOA)

5 ENR programs l Oberlin-in-London Oberlin-in-London l Two Oberlin faculty and ~25 Oberlin students l Spring semester only l Application deadline in March l Spring 2015 program features Gina Perez (Comparative American Studies) and Baron Pineda (Anthropology); Spring 2016 – Anu Needham (English) and Steve Volk (History) l OC tuition, room and board. Some additional support for financial aid students l PRESHCO - Programa de Estudios Hispánicos en Córdoba (Spain) PRESHCO l Fall, Spring or full year l Four semesters or equivalent of Spanish l Application deadline once each semester l Application and Information through Hispanic Studies department l OC tuition, room and board – costs include support for airfare, excursions, food, books

6 Academic Leave of Absence (ALOA) 1. Consortial Programs of the Great Lakes College Association (GLCA) or the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM) Consortial Programs 2. Oberlin Affiliated Programs Oberlin Affiliated Programs 3. Non-affiliated Programs

7 Academic Leave of Absence (ALOA) Requirements Completion of at least two semesters at Oberlin Major officially declared Must be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 4 courses/16 credits equivalent) while on the program Educational reasons for going Allow for on time completion of graduation requirements Seniors have special restrictions in second semester

8 Two Steps for Academic Leave process Apply to Oberlin for Academic Leave of Absence Apply to Study Away Program (some programs have early application deadlines) –Usually requires application, academic recommendation, transcript, study away advisor recommendation

9 Academic Leave of Absence(ALOA) Application Online Academic Leave Application Required info sessions begin in October 2014 and last until March 13, 2015 Must attend in order to set up application account For Fall 2015, Spring 2016 or full-year 2015-16, deadline is ….

11 ALOA Application Information about you and your progress toward graduation Essay and advisor approval Justification for fall or spring request Once you have selected a program, you will submit: Preliminary transfer of credit forms Waiver form for international programs Insurance verification

12 Transfer of Credit Information Must be enrolled as a full-time student as defined by the program ALOA semester = 4 courses/16 credits One CD course counts from ALOA if taken abroad or on certain US programs Courses may count toward major but not toward curriculum distribution ALOA courses do not count toward 3 course/12 credit transfer limit Credits transfer but grades do not

13 Affiliated Programs Have been approved by Oberlin department or program and the Off-Campus Study Committee Oberlin financial aid/scholarship and federal aid will apply if qualified Includes GLCA-recognized programs

14 Non-affiliated programs Not specifically approved by an Oberlin department or program Only Federal financial aid will apply to the program cost if qualified Approval for ALOA and transfer of credit may be more difficult

15 Financing Study Away Generally, family contribution is still expected. On ENR semester programs (London and PRESHCO) tuition and fees apply. Oberlin tuition is charged for other programs. Room and board charges are determined by the program fees. Consortial and Oberlin Affiliated programs allow Oberlin and Federal aid to apply to tuition for the semester. Non-affiliated programs allow federal aid to apply if student qualifies. For answers to specific financial questions, contact the Office of Financial Aid. www.studyabroadfunding.org

16 Suggestions for planning l Narrow down list of majors/declare your major l Discuss study away plans with advisor in major department l Take a look at the study away website: oberlin.edu/studyaway l As early as October 2014: Attend a required information session to start ALOA application account l Meet with study abroad advisor
