12  Mars is called the Red Planet. Red is caused by rust-colored dust (iron oxide) that covers Mars’ surface and atmosphere around Mars. Sometimes giant dust storms cover the planet.  Mars is the closest planet to the earth. It is smaller, drier and colder than earth.  Mars is 4 th planet from the sun.  A Martian year is 687 earth days!  Mars does not have water.  Mars has a volcano that is 13 miles high. It is named Olympus Mons. It has a grand canyon, Valles Marineris, as long as USA is wide.  Opportunity, a Mars vehicle robot, is still on active on Mars.  Mars is lighter than earth. It has a thin atmosphere.  Mars has two moons, Diemos and Phobus.
