Muscle Contraction

Message 1. Nerve sends impulse to muscle; neuromuscular junction 2. End of nerve releases chemical Acetylcholine (Ach)

3. Ach diffuses across gap to sarcolemma 4. Sarcolemma causes change in the Sarcoplasmic Reticulum (connected by T- Tubules)

Reaction 5. Calcium released from SR (Cisternae) 6. Cross bridges attach to actin 7. Myosin pulls actin 8. ADP (the product released by the breakdown of ATP) breaks bond and stores the energy gained

Relaxation 9. Stop sending message 10. Calcium pumped back in SR (cisternae) 11. 1 last ATP breaks bond; actin glides back to normal

All-or-None Law:  Myofiber will contract completely or not at all. The whole muscle doesn’t obey this law, only myofibers.
