1 Questions Define Ecology.
What is the difference between biotic and abiotic factors? Give some examples of both Give some examples of ecosystems. How often can they change and why? How do biotic factors interact with other biotic factors and the abiotic? What are some of the major biomes in the world? Draw an illustration of the levels of organization from a cell all the way up to a biome.

2 Introducing

3 log, -o, y (G) suffix study of
Ecology Eco logy the study of the relationships between biotic and abiotic factors in environments eco (G) root home, abode log, -o, y (G) suffix study of ecosystem ecoclimate ecotourism climatology epidemiology zoology

4 Ecosystem Biotic Factors Abiotic Factors
includes all abiotic and biotic factors in one particular environment Biotic Factors Abiotic Factors the living parts of an ecosystem the nonliving parts of an ecosystem

5 Biotic Factors Bio include plants, animals, fungi, microorganisms
bio(s), bio(t) (G) root life biotechnology biomechanics biosphere biofeedback biostatistics biography biotic biology

6 Examples of Biotic Factors

7 a, an (G) prefix not, without
Abiotic Factors A include air, water, soil, temperature, wind, source of energy (usually sun) a, an (G) prefix not, without abiotic amusia amoral atoxic

8 Examples of Abiotic Factors

9 Examples of Ecosystems
Coral Reef in Belize Mountains in Colorado Arizona Desert

10 Ecosystems Biotic Abiotic
do not necessarily have clear boundaries due to biotic and abiotic changes can change daily as things move from one ecosystem to another Biotic Abiotic migration, seed dispersal flood, erosion, drought

11 Biotic Factors interact with each other in complex ways
parasitism mutualism competition such as also interact with abiotic factors in the ecosystem dependent upon water, minerals, temperature, light

12

13 Biome a major regional or global biotic community, a super ecosystem, defined chiefly by the dominant forms of plant life and the prevailing climate

14 Major Biomes of the World
desert grassland tropical rain forest deciduous forest coniferous forest tundra ocean

15 Levels of Organization
biome group of organs working together one individual living thing group of different kinds of tissues working together all organisms of the same kind living in one area large region with typical plants and animals that includes several ecosystems all living and nonliving things interacting within a certain area all interacting populations in an ecosystem group of similar cells organized to work together smallest unit of living things ecosystem community population organism organ system organ tissue cell

17 12.1 Questions 1-5 Also complete your mini poster for the zebra mussels. Must include information about the zebra mussel and how to prevent their movement from one area to another.

18 Research Questions Draw a diagram of an ecosystem near where you live . Label the factors “biotic” or “abiotic.” Give two examples of how plants and animals affect their environment Describe how temperature, light, and soil affect an ecosystem Think of a forest ecosystem. Now imagine that a large amounts of dust and ash into the air, blocking out sunlight. How might the forest ecosystem be affected if the sunlight is blocked out for a day? For a year? (ANSWER MUST BE A PARAGRAPH)
