What life was like… During great depression it was really hard for people to afford food. So they had to find ways to make a meal for their family! Back then there were many things you could do to make a meal. In this power point we are going to explain what they did to make and get food!! YOU READY FOR THIS!?!?

Gardens! growing your own gardens so you didn’t have to go out and buy the food. It was much cheaper! You could also sell the things you grew!! So you could go buy other essentials. Like milk, butter, and other meat In the next slide we will show you a recipe for a meal with a lot of things they could have grown

Depression Salad 1 can yellow hominy, drained 1 can black eyed peas, drained 1 green pepper, chopped 1 tomato, chopped 1 small onion, chopped 2 ribs celery, diced 1/4 cup cooking oil, optional 1/4 cup vinegar salt and pepper to taste Mix all the above ingredients together and serve hot or cold.

Use other ingredients! they would try and use everything they possibly could. So if they had left over food from earlier in the day they would try a incorporate it in the next mean they had! In the next slide you can see that they would use bacon grease in the recipe!

Hot dog casserole! 1 large green pepper, cut into long slivers 1 large onion, cut in half, then in long slivers 1 clove garlic, chopped 2 tablespoons bacon fat 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cut into 2" inch pieces 8 hot dogs, cut into 1/2 inch pieces 8 ounces tomato sauce 1/2 cup water dash cinnamon salt and pepper to taste 1/2 teaspoon brown sugar Preheat the oven at 350/o. In a large frying pan, place green pepper, onion, and garlic in bacon drippings. Sauté until slightly tender but not soft. Set the pan aside. Place potatoes in a large saucepan filled with salted water. Cook the potatoes at a slow boil for 10 minutes. Drain and set aside. To prepare sauce, put tomato sauce, water, brown sugar and cinnamon in a large bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste, mix well. Add the sautéed vegetables, potatoes and hot dogs to the sauce. Mix well. Place the mixture into a greased 2 quart casserole dish or pan. Cover the dish and bake for about 45 to 50 minutes. Allow the dish to set for a few minutes before serving.

Going meatless?? They would try not to use meat in every meal just to save money!! Meat was expensive to by so with out meat then It would be a pretty cheap meal. Think how hard that would have been? Not having meat? In the next slide we have a recipe for meatless loaf!!! Yay!!

Meatless loaf!! 1 cup rice Cup peanuts crushed 1 cup cottage cheese 1 egg 1 tablespoon oil 1 teaspoon salt Combine all the ingredients together. bake in a loaf pan for 30 minutes or until loaf is good and set.

Your Grandparents! We all might know someone who lived in the Great Depression. It might be your grandparents or a neighbor, but it was really hard for them. They didn’t have much money at all so making it through the great depression is a great accomplishment.
