Documenting Research Outputs and Outcomes Alasdair Cain Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research & Technology U.S. Department of Transportation June 2014 www.rita.dot.gov/researchhub

The Research Hub – Documenting the Research Lifecycle

UTC Program Representation in the Research Hub

Project Outputs Definition: – The direct, tangible products of your research work Examples: – Technologies or techniques: – Inventions, patent applications & licenses – Databases, models – Software/netware – Educational aids or curricula – Instruments, or equipment Does NOT include: – Information dissemination tools (reports, journal papers/publications, conference presentations, webinars, etc.) – Academic performance measures (courses offered, research projects funded, graduated students, etc.)

Project Outcomes Definition: – the impacts and influences of your research outside the academic world Examples: – Deployment of a new technology or technique – Adoption of a new or improved practice or procedure by the transportation industry – Quantifiable impacts on safety, economy, environment, infrastructure resilience, etc. – Cited/documented impacts on decision- making, policies, or legislation

Submitting Information on Project Outputs & Outcomes Provide specific, concise, written descriptions, including quantitative evidence if available (one sentence to a couple of paragraphs in length) Active UTC grants: – Submit outputs/outcomes in your PPPR reports, or to research.hub@dot.govresearch.hub@dot.gov Past UTC grants: – Submit outputs/outcomes to research.hub@dot.govresearch.hub@dot.gov Submission format: Project Title (as in Research Hub) Output/ Outcome DescriptionSource/ Reference Structural Design, Construction, and Evaluation of a Prestressed Concrete Bridge Using Ultra High Performance Concrete Pi Girders OutputThe result of this project was the pi-girder, a 33-inch-deep deckbulb-double-Tee girder that can span up to 87 feet. This component facilitates the accelerated construction of durable infrastructure systems. “Research Impacts: Better-Faster- Cheaper” (2010)], AASHTO Structural Design, Construction, and Evaluation of a Prestressed Concrete Bridge Using Ultra High Performance Concrete Pi Girders OutcomeThe Iowa Department of Transportation completed the first deployment of the pi- girder in a bridge near Aurora. The Jakway Park Bridge used three adjacent pi-girders in its main span. It opened to traffic in 2008. “Research Impacts: Better-Faster- Cheaper“(2010)], AASHTO

Questions / Comments? Alasdair Cain (202) 366-0934; alasdair.cain@dot.gov Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research & Technologyalasdair.cain@dot.gov www.rita.dot.gov/researchhub

Project Records A project record is a summary description of a research project (project title, abstract, sponsor, performer, funding amount, etc.) A project record must be submitted to TRB’s RiP database for each UTC- funded project within one month of project selection Project records from RiP are used to populate the Research Hub UTC program managers must ensure that project information in RiP is complete, accurate and consistently represented: – Ensure all fields are populated – Ensure that RITA is included as a project sponsor – Check for (and delete) duplicate records – Ensure that project records are kept up to date – Change status from “active” to “completed” when project ends If a different organization enters your project records into RiP, you need to inform them of any necessary corrections or additions

Final Reports Within two months of project completion, UTCs must send the final report URL and the exact project title to research.hub@dot.govresearch.hub@dot.gov Submitted reports will then be: – Ingested into NTL Digital Library – Assigned an NTL-based URL – Attached to project records in the Research Hub Example URL in Research Hub……
