1 HEALTH & LITERACY Literacy Council of Wood County

2  The Literacy Council of Wood County works with adult learners in the Wood County area to help them improve their reading, math, and English language skills.  We offer individualized programs with one- to-one tutoring, small group tutoring, and computer-based learning.

3 Literacy Council of Wood County Integrating health into adult education  Poor health interferes with the success of adult learners.  Low literacy and poor health are interrelated in a number of ways.  Health information and practical skills can be applied directly to adults’ lives and incorporated into daily decision-making.

4 Literacy Council of Wood County Integrating health into adult education  Adult learners say learning about health is important and improves their literacy skills.  Students find ABE and ESL programs to be good places to learn about health.  Literacy and health goals have a better chance for success when pursued together.

5 Literacy Council of Wood County Health Literacy Curriculum  Design a health literacy curriculum that can be used in various settings and formats, with learners of various educational levels and cultures.  Develop modules to incorporate into Adult Secondary Credit (ASC) classes, GED/HSED preparation, and individual literacy tutoring.

9 Literacy Council of Wood County Health Literacy Curriculum  Green Unit  Section One: What do health care providers do This section explains the role of common health care providers  Section Two: Where to go for health care This section explains the function of various health care facilities

10 Literacy Council of Wood County Health Literacy Curriculum  Blue Unit  Section One: How to talk to health care professionals This section introduces participants to the background information needed to better communicate with their health care providers  Section Two: Creating a family health history This section introduces participants to the concept of a family health history and provides them with the tools to record, chart, and catalog their own family health history

11 Literacy Council of Wood County Health Literacy Curriculum  Yellow Unit  Section One: Understanding medications This section explores the differences between name brand medication, generic medications, over the counter medications, and homeopathic medications.  Section Two: Understanding prescriptions This section is a nuts and bolts, hands- on workshop for understanding prescription warnings and how to chart and keeping track of medication use.

12 Literacy Council of Wood County Health Literacy Curriculum  The curriculum is designed to be used in a one- to-one setting or in a group/classroom setting.  Portions of the curriculum can also be presented as workshops within the community at health care events, employer sites, community-based organizations and other outreach sites.
