4 Types of Residencies

5 Short-term projects – 3-9 activities taking place over at least three consecutive or separate days within a month. – $2,500 to $6,000 Extended projects – 10 or more activities taking place over more than one month and up to one year. – $6,000 to $12,000

9 Public schools Libraries Community Centers Churches, Synagogues, Mosques Parks Music Schools Civic Organizations First, think locally. What are the organizations in your life, in your neighborhood?

10 The Application: The Project Description has to tell your story.

11 Give us all of the facts. Be specific, be concrete: Who is your target audience? Who are your community partners? What will you do? When will you do it? Where will you do it?

12 Capture the spirit of the project: What are the goals for this residency? What compelled you to do this project? Why did you choose this community? Why is your intended audience important? Why is this a good partnership? How will the partners work together? How will you build your audiences? How is this project special?

14 Measuring effectiveness How are you going to measure the success of your residency? Is this something you will discuss with the community partner? Will you use materials to measure the success (e.g., surveys, etc.)?

15 Supplemental Materials Concert documentation Letter of Intent – See example in RPP guidelines Make sure artist fee is same in letter and budget CD work sample Financial statements – Audited financial document and operating budget Publicity and press materials Proof of U.S. residency All of these materials are explained in the guidelines

16 How Will My Application Be Evaluated? 3 independent panelists specializing in residency and educational activities evaluate proposals based on: – Written Application The application is read and scored by the panelists prior to listening – Artistry of the CD Work Sample Panel will listen to the ensemble’s CD-R if the application advances past preliminary reading *Separate Panels for Classical/Contemporary and Jazz disciplines

17 Written Application Evaluation Mission of Organization/ Project & Goals – History of presenting/performing if applicable, residency projects and audiences served – Content of the proposed residency types of activities reasons for choosing the community partner plans for implementing the project – Relevance of project to the organization’s mission

18 Application Evaluation, Continued Ensemble Residency Training & Experience – Does your organization have residency experience? – If not, why are you interested in educational outreach? Partnership – level of involvement – How is this a good fit?

19 Application Evaluation, Continued Budget & Organizational Capacity – Project and organizational budgets – Does your organization have the financial and human resources to successfully accomplish this project? Audience & Marketing – Community(ies) to be served – Proposed project outcomes – Plan for marketing the residency

20 CD Work Sample Evaluation Artistry of Ensemble Jazz: Ability to perform scored and improvised music

21 CD Work Sample Must be in CD-R format ONLY Must feature recordings from 2007 to present 15-minute playing time max. Include works that are similar to music planned for the residency May contain music from a concert, studio/home recording, and/or commercial releases Jazz: include cue timings for improvisation

23 What the Program Funds RPP funds up to 75 percent of the following expenses only – Ensemble Partner’s residency fee and related travel, hotel, and per diem – residency-related promotion and production costs. – Organizing Partner must match the grant with a minimum of 25 percent of earned and/or contributed income In-kind not eligible

24 Terminology Organizing Partner: – Presenter or ensemble – Lead Applicant – Receives grant funds – Responsible for organizing residency and all activities Ensemble Partner: – Performs residency – May be both OP and EP Community Partner: – Local organization providing access to community

25 Eligibility - Ensemble Based in the U.S. or its territories; Professional group with a stable core of 2–10 musicians, one musician per part If a jazz ensemble: improvisation as an integral part of its work; Can document at least 10 public performances of at least 3 different programs and/or residency projects in the past 5 years; Primary member of the ensemble is a U.S. citizen or has permanent resident status; or the group has 501(c)(3) status CMA Organization-level member; No unfinished CMA-sponsored residency projects at this time; and No overdue reports or financial obligations to CMA.
