The United Kingdom Independence Party THE TRUTH ABOUT TRADE BEYOND THE EU June, 2015 13 Britain leaving the EU ‘won't make a blind bit of difference’ to trade with Europe, says Graeme Macdonald, boss of JCB; he claims the public are victims of 'scaremongering.’ Why leaving the EU would not be a disaster for the UK’s exporters; the total extra costs which British businesses would face on their exports would be far lower than the amount Britain currently pays into the EU budget. (approx THIRTY MILLION GBP NET EVERY SINGLE DAY OF THE YEAR) With fundamental reform, the EU can work for Britain - but leaving should hold no fear for us. Fewer than 5 per cent of UK companies directly export to the EU yet all are forced to bear the burden of its regulations. The EU is not a free-trade area but a customs union, and one which has spectacularly failed to deliver trade deals with rising economic giants like China. This is a damning failure: over the last few years, countries far smaller than the UK but, crucially, outside the EU (including Iceland and Switzerland) have been able to secure free-trade agreements with Beijing. Things the establishment doesn’t want you to hear: Time to regain control over our trade, our fishing, our laws and our borders … The Continent exports more to the UK than vice versa. The idea that the Germans would stop wanting to sell us their Audis, the French their cheese, the Italians their wine and the Spanish their fruit is risible – which of course means that WE would continue to sell to THEM.
