4 01/02/2005ETRTO/RMA/JATMAPage 4 RECAP ON PREVIOUS GTR Fall 1997 – tyre sector chapter settled in the TABD (Trans-Atlantic Business Dialog) -> tested-approved once – accepted everywhere Focus on ECE 30 and FMVSS 109 -> GTS2000 Presented to GRRF based on the ’98 Agr. -> OK to start a WG for a GTR with UK chairmanship Feb. 2002 -> submitted a proposal to GRRF Oct. 2002 -> Due to TREAD Act the project was stopped

5 01/02/2005ETRTO/RMA/JATMAPage 5 SUGGESTIONS Communication tool to promote GTR to countries non- CP of UNECE NG to refer to GTS2000 due to the various changes occurred mainly to FMVSS Priority on sidewall markings harmonization Select the best regulatory practice – most appropriate standard (engineering, physical and scientific point-of- view, related to real world performance and validated) For approval of a world class tyre Economical evaluation in case of specific requirement (world class vs regional requirements) Table of recognition with acceptance of test methods by Countries (no need for supplementary markings) Define precisely the tyre type vs vehicle type (ref. SR1 vehicle mass and categories harmonization of UNECE WP.29)

6 01/02/2005ETRTO/RMA/JATMAPage 6 INTRODUCTION The Tyre Industry, in order to be a global player in the global market, currently is required to comply with a number of different national or even regional requirements that exist across the global market and which add cost, leadtime and complexity to tyres.

7 01/02/2005ETRTO/RMA/JATMAPage 7 SCOPE “The objective of the GTR is to establish harmonized requirements for geometric dimensions, marking, performance, testing procedures  and selection and fitting  of new pneumatic tyres which are primarily designed for use on the road  insert vehicle category .”
