CLASS PROJECT: CAREER PATHWAYS CSD 509J Mid-Year Update

WHAT IS CLASS?  CLASS Project is developed and grown by teachers. The goal is not to add on but to enhance Corvallis 509j’s current strengths.  CLASS is a proven process that is sustainable and results in increased student achievement, recruitment, retention and growth of professional development.

CORVALLIS SCHOOL DISTRICT VISION  Vision: Students grow to be world-class learners, engaged citizens, and leaders of the future.  Mission: Provide all students with a relevant and challenging education that prepares them for future success as engaged citizens and contributing members of our world community.  The National Association of Elementary School Principals (2001), embraced six important roles of leadership: establishing high expectations for students; connecting content and instruction to standards; using multiple sources of data for assessment of learning; placing a high priority on learning for students and adults; providing ongoing professional development in a culture of learning; and embracing the community’s support in the success of the school

CAREER PATH OPPORTUNITIES SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO FUTURE EDUCATIONAL REFORM  No Child Left Behind  Common Core Standards – must be implemented  HB 2220 – Proficiency Based Practices – “collection of effective instructional practices centered on student learning and standards based achievement that ensures all students are prepared for college and careers.” 2013-14  Smarter Balance Assessment 2014 “The work of teacher leaders must impact teacher expectations, teacher content knowledge base, and teacher practice”

CAREER PATH OPPORTUNITIES SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT  Enrollment: 6,370  Free and Reduced Average: 35.8%  Special Ed enrollment: 10.3%  Drop out rates: CHS 1.17%, CV 0.78%  Number of students identified as Homeless: 175 total so far this year, (163 active, 12 withdrawn)  “The knowledge and skills that teachers must master to be effective for all students in our schools are complex and ever-changing. We know that teaching is like rocket science: complicated, collaborative, and capable of taking our students to places yet to be explored.”

CAREER PATH OPPORTUNITIES SHOULD BE CONNECTED TO TEACHERS CHOOSING LEADERSHIP ROLES  Corvallis currently has;  Department chairs  Coaches  Mentor Teachers  TOSA  Intervention Coaches  “Teachers exhibit leadership in multiple ways. The variety of roles ensures that teachers can find ways to lead that fit their talents and interests. Regardless of the roles they assume, teacher leaders shape the culture of their schools, improve student learning, and influence practice among their peers.”

OBJECTIVES TO BE ACHIEVED:  Keep procedures transparent and efficient  Identify different career paths available to teachers with the goal of increasing student achievement; those career paths will:  Acknowledge the diverse expertise teachers acquire during their careers  Have specific roles and responsibilities  Define professional knowledge and skills teachers must acquire to fulfill each role  Career Paths become a sustainable option for all Corvallis educators

KEY MESSAGE Corvallis School District employs talented educators who deserve to both share their knowledge and learn from the expertise of others. In our vision:  Effective teachers may take on additional roles and responsibilities while staying partially within the teaching ranks  School leadership is a joint endeavor with highly effective classroom teachers and administrators  We realize teachers have been serving in informal leadership roles for ages…now we have the opportunity to formalize that

NEXT STEPS  Teacher Survey  Administrator Survey  Utilize information to build career path fit for CSD509J  Following slides are examples of career paths from other districts/states/research  Complete the blueprint

MORE RESEARCH  The work of teacher leaders must impact teacher expectations, teacher content knowledge base, and teacher practice. In an era of teacher accountability and teacher quality schools can no longer continue to tolerate the fact that 40 percent of students in urban and rural schools never make it to high school graduation. To that end, urgency suggests that we begin to examine the potential of teacher leadership.  Effective schools research emphasizes the impact of teacher content knowledge, best practice methodology and the powerful role teacher expectations play in student achievement  effective principals involved in school improvement exhibit the following characteristics  Lead through shared vision and values  Involve faculty members in decision-making  Provide relevant staff development and training  Model behaviors consistent with the vision and values

AND MORE RESEARCH  “The knowledge and skills that teachers must master to be effective for all students in our schools are complex and ever-changing.
