Magnets have an invisible force that pulls things toward them or pushes things away Magnets are made of metals containing: -Iron -Cobalt -Nickel -Steel In order for a magnet to become magnetized the metal must be exposed to a magnetic field When a metal is exposed to a magnetic field the metal’s molecules rearrange WHAT IS A MAGNET?!

Do magnets have a specific shape? No! Magnets come in all different shapes and sizes They can be… -long -flat -curved -big -small -thick -thin SHAPE?

Some magnets can be found in the natural environment Natural magnets are found in some rocks which contain iron Magnetic materials, like iron bits, can be found in sand and other types of soil MAGNETS IN NATURE?

Can you make a magnet?! What do you think? Turn to a classmate and discuss what you think and why CREATE MAGNET?

The answer is… Yes! It is possible to magnetize an iron or steel object by stroking it with a magnet. The item being magnetized MUST contain iron or steel CAN YOU CREATE A MAGNET?
