What size is your carbon footprint? Making a solar powered boat Here are some ideas to help you build a solar powered boat. You could have a speed trial or race to see whose goes the fastest! Could solar panels be used to power large boats on the sea and perhaps even ferries? That would be great but the amount of power they produce isn’t enough

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a solar powered boat 1. Materials will need to f _ _ _ _ and be w _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _. 2. List some materials that you might use. (Are they waste materials and / or recyclable?) 3. Why might you use string instead of tape? And masking tape instead of Cellotape? What kind of materials will you need to make a boat?

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a solar powered boat Out of thick card and masking tape we have made: 1. A ramp on which to fasten the PV cells; 2. A tower to mount the electric motor and propeller. You might want to test how high your model sits above the water, in the sink!

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a solar powered boat You don’t have to use card and bottles. These people used polystyrene waste.

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a solar powered boat All these boats have different designs. They use bits of waste in a variety of ways. Remember to think about how you will mount your PV cells. Can you change the direction they face?

What size is your carbon footprint? Making a solar powered boat Lots of different designs worked well. When the models had been tested they were dismantled. The electrical components were reused. The other materials were recycled or reused where possible. This PowerPoint and lesson are based on work by Ian Mitchell, The Green Egg Company, developed & edited by Amie Andrews for TLCP and Ali Ross, Sundog Energy.
