What is a function? It could be thought of as a Function Machine where certain inputs go in and certain outputs come out.

Suppose we put some numbers in our Function Machine and certain numbers come out. 3, 5, 4,5,6 6, 7, 8 Do you see a pattern between the inputs and outputs? Pattern: Add 2 to the input to get the output.

Writing a Function Rule Write a function rule for the input-output table. SOLUTION What is the pattern? A function rule for the input-output table is y = x + 2.5. ANSWER Add 2.5 to each input x to get the output y. What is the function rule? y = x + 2.5 +2.5

Making Cuts In the cheese-slicing diagram below, the input c is the number of cuts made across the center of the cheese, and the output p is the resulting total number of pieces of cheese. Write a rule for the function. Then use the rule to find the number of pieces made with 9 cuts. STEP 1 Make an input-output table. STEP 2 Write a function rule. Notice that each output value is twice the input value. So, a rule for the function is p = 2c. x2x2 x2x2 x2x2 x2x2 STEP 3 p = 2(9) p = 18 So there are 18 pieces made with 9 cuts. Evaluate the function when c = 9 to find the number of pieces made with 9 cuts.
