CH. 11-3 B & E Multiplying & Dividing Integers
2
Try These… 4 x 7 28 4 x (-7) -4 x 7 -4 x (-7) -28 28
3
The Rules For Integers! When multiply or dividing 2 integers with the SAME sign your answer is always POSITIVE!!! When multiply or dividing 2 integers with DIFFERENT signs your answer is always NEGATIVE!!!
4
What does multiplying REALLY mean??? When you see a problem like 2 x 3 what it says is 2 groups of 3 positives 6 TOTAL positives!
5
What does multiplying REALLY mean??? OK, lets try this one 2 x (-3) ! 2 groups of 3 negatives 6 TOTAL negatives!
6
Now when a negative is first… When a negative is first it means to take away from the groups! So if you have -2 x 3, it means that you have 2 groups of 3 and you are TAKING away the POSITIVES! In order to do this you are starting with a Zero Pair so that you have something that you can take away from! 6 TOTAL negatives!
7
Again…what happens with double negatives?! When a negative is first it means to take away from the groups! So if you have -2 x (-3), it means that you have 2 groups of 3 and you are TAKING away the NEGATIVES! 6 TOTAL positives!
8
More than problem, just go in ORDER! -5 (-3) (-2) 15 (-2) -30
9
NOW…lets try some! 8(-7) -15 ÷ 3 -3 x (-6) 20 ÷ (-4) -4 x 6 x (-3)-36 ÷ (-6) ÷ (-2) -56 -5 18-5 -24 x (-3) 72 6 ÷ (-2) -3
