2. NEON SYMBOL The symbol for Neon is ‘Ne’.

3. NEON TYPE OF ELEMENT Neon is a non-metal, a Nobel Gas to be precise. A Nobel Gas is a very stable gas, and they don’t have any smell, taste, colour, and they aren’t flammable. They used to be in a column called Group 0, as it was believed that was very hard, if not impossible to combine them with other atoms to form chemical compounds. After more research, it was found that some do actually combine and make chemical compounds, so their column was re-named to Group 18. The Nobel Gasses are Helium (He), Neon (Ne), Argon (Ar), Krypton (Kr), Xenon (Xe) and Radon (Rn).

4. NEON DISCOVERY Neon was discovered in1898, by an English scientists, named William Ramsay and Morris Travers, of University College London. Ramsay and Travers knew that an atom existed between Helium (He) and Argon (Ar) in the periodic table. Helium was found in a type of radioactive material called cleveite, a Uranium material. They made an educated guess, and said that the undiscovered element would be able to be found in another material. ?

5. NEON FACTS Neon is the 4 th most abundant element in the universe, and only 0.0018% of the atmosphere consists of the element. When a high voltage is applied to the gas in a vacuum, the gas lights up. This is what is seen in Neon signs, like the open signs in shop windows. The melting point of Neon is -248.57 o C. The boiling point of Neon is -246.0 o C. The common state is in a gas state.
