Stanford English Language Proficiency Test The Stanford English Language Proficiency Test (Stanford ELP) reflects all aspects necessary for comprehensive, standards-based assessment of English language proficiency. Developed by ESL experts, this research-based test evaluates the listening, reading, comprehension, writing, and speaking skills of K-12 English language learners with the goal of guiding them to full participation in English language classrooms. Variety of Uses Identifying and Placing Students Measuring Outcomes and Showing Progress Evaluating Program Effectiveness Instructional Planning Purpose Adopt the Test Designed to Meet No Child Left Behind Requirements for English Proficiency Administration Individual for Readiness level; Group except Listening & Speaking subtests for Preliteracy level; Group except Speaking subtest for Primary to High School levels. Proficiency Levels ScoreLevel 1 PRE-EMERGENT 2 EMERGENT 3 BASIC 4 INTERMEDIATE 5 PROFICIENT There are 5 Proficiency Levels for both tests 5 being the highest score SELP is a tool used for exiting of Bilingual Program

Testing Windows Initial/Fall Retest/Spring Fall Testing Window –PK-12 th Aug. 24- Sept. 18, 2009 –Testing MUST be completed within 20 days of enrollment Purpose of Fall Testing –Identification Testing for NEW PK-12 English Language Learners Students (ELLS) Administer SELP first then SSLP Spring Testing Window Pk-2 nd TBA 3 rd -5 th TBA 6 th -12 th TBA Purpose of Retesting Testing SELP-tool used for exiting Bilingual Program Please avoid all unnecessary testing Pk-2 nd Administer SELP/SSLP 3 rd -5 th Administer SELP only 6 th -12 th Administer SELP only Do not retest NON-LEPS, M1s & M2s Administer SELP first then SSLP

SELP/SSLP PROCESS To avoid any delays, please follow these steps

Student Information on Test Booklet All imperative student information must be filled/bubbled in before submittal Make sure students’ I.D. & name match Areas that must be filled Student Name Local Student ID (Not State ID/SS#) SS# only apply for Pre-Registration Students Campus Name Writing Score Test Date Student Demographics

Student Information All the areas that have a check mark must be filled/bubbled in (Box #7) Please start bubbling in student number from left to right –Leave extra columns blank Do not forget to bubble in Box #8 “Other Information” also known as “Writing Score.” –Use “I” & “J” for Scoring Writing Part This applies to grades 1st-12 th only. Tests missing this information will not be scored until all information is provided. Start Here

DO NOT SUBMIT A PURPLE HEADER Teacher Headers Purple Headers In lieu of Teacher Headers, please use; Sentence strips Plain paper or rubber band Boxes (when submitting many tests) Do NOT use post-it notes. It leaves a residue that jams our scanners. When submitting SELP/SSLP tests, please make sure to sort out by grade and language. Please return All unused Teacher Headers to Joanna

Testing Windows Differences INITIAL WINDOW Initial Testing MUST be completed within 20 days of enrollment Submit tests ASAP Labels will not be provided for this testing window, therefore, all student information must be filled/bubbled in. RETEST WINDOW The entire grade level must be finished testing before submitting to A.R.& E. Department for scanning DO NOT BRING IN “PIECE MEALS” –This only creates discrepancies on reports There will be a schedule for each campus to follow –EACH CAMPUS WILL BE ASSIGNED A DEADLINE TO SUBMIT SELP/SSLP RETESTS

All SELP/SSLP tests must be HAND DELIVERED @ A.R.E. Office Room 210 – CAB Not @ A.R.E. Warehouse Not @ Bilingual Department DO NOT send them via BISD Mail Test Delivery

What happens once tests are submitted to the A.R.E. Department? Bilingual Testers use Student Plus to verify every test –During this stage Testers verify; all student information –Tests of students that did not need to be tested will not be scanned/scored. Please avoid ALL unnecessary testing Make sure students are administered correct test

What’s next? After tests are verified, then they are cut at the A.R. & E. Warehouse Tests are scanned Data is imported and scored Reports are printed & faxed/emailed to your campus

SELP/SSLP TESTING OF SPED STUDENTS There is no need to submit a SELP or SSLP test for students that can not test or did not respond. Instead; Submit a “SELP/SSLP Testing of SPED STUDENTS” form. Make a copy of the back of a test booklet and fill out all student information in your SPF. Turn in FORM with Student Information to Lucy Escamilla @ Bilingual Dept.

SAMPLE OF FORM This form is available on the Assessment, Research, & Evaluation Department website (SELP/SSLP Information Tab) Submit this form with student information attn: Lucy Escamilla Remember this form is for SpEd Students that CANNOT test or did not respond.

Test Results All results will be emailed to campus LPAC administrator with a carbon copy email sent to Lucy Escamilla In case Joanna is not available please keep in mind Lucy will have results for all scored tests
