1 THE EVOLUTION OF CELL PHONES: FROM BLOCKS TO SLIM TABLETS By Edith Martinez and Christian Chavez

2 Motorola & The First Cell Phone Ever… In 1983, the first ever cell phone was ivented by Motorola. It was called the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X and it priced at around $3,995. Ever since this device was created, human communication has become way easier. After creating this phone, Motorola created various other phones like the Razr V3 and the latest Droid MAXX.

3 In 1992, Nokia decided to join the mobile phone business and released their first phone, Nokia 101. In 1998, Nokia became the leading global phone manufacturer. When Apple released their first phone it intervened with Nokia’s profit. Nokia also experienced their first quarterly loss in over a decade, right after the Android operating system became popular with HTC phone. In order to stay in business they hired Microsoft executive Stephen Elop as their first non-Finnish executive. After Elop was hired 1,800 jobs were cut from the company. In 2011, Nokia officially teamed up with Microsoft announcing that Nokia smartphones will now carry the Microsoft operating system; leading to 14,000 jobs being cut from the company. 2 years later Nokia agreed to sell their entire mobile phone business to Microsoft for $7.18 billion.

4 Samsung joined the mobile phone business in 1997, but didn’t release their first phone until 2002; when they introduced the Samsung SGH-T100. In 2005, they began outshining Sony as consumers preferred electronic manufacturer. All was going well until Samsung’s chairman, Lee Kun-hee, stepped down after being convicted of tax evasion in 2008. 2 years later he was re-appointed his position and that same year they released the first Samsung Galaxy. 5 In 1993, Apple released their first personal digital assistant(PDA). With the production of so many phones, Apple decided to release their first ever iPhone as well as iOS 1.1.1. in 2007, doing so they almost dethroned Nokia. In 2008, they sold a million iPhone 3G’s in their opening weekend. They also launched the AppStore with iOS 2.0, introducing third party applications. In 2009, Apple sold 1 million 3GS’s iPhones in it’s opening weekend. In 2011, Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs, resigned and was replaced by Tim Cook, previously Apple's Chief Operating Officer. Later on in the year, Steve Jobs lost his battle to cancer. In 2012, Apple released the iPhone 5 and sold 5 million units in the first weekend. In 2013, Apple released the iPhone 5s with fingerprint authentication technology and the iPhone 5c (Apple’s first “budget device”) and sold a combination of 9 million handsets on the first weekend after the phones’ launch. They also revamped their operating system with the release of iOS 7. The latest iPhone model is the iPhone 6 & iPhone 6 plus with the latest operating system iOS 8.

7 How have these devices affected our lives? Cell phones have become a necessity for life. They have replaced certain everyday objects, we now use cell phones in our everyday life as a phone, voice recorder, diary, alarm clock, flashlight, and so much more. We are now able to be in contact with everyone no matter where we are. We are always connected. Cell phones have replaced certain everyday objects. A cell phone has so many uses and it has end­less pos­sib­il­it­ies that have now grown to be a ne­ces­sary part of life for many people
