Readers’ Workshop : Supports and challenges all students Allows time for students to do authentic reading Provides a structure for the teacher to work 1-on-1 or in small groups to give targeted feedback and instruction to students Offers a time for students to use critical thinking and analysis as required by CCSS (and good teaching) Come to our Literacy Night later in the year to learn more about Readers’ Workshop. Time and date to be announced.

Writers’ Workshop What is Writers’ Workshop? Teacher provides direct instruction on the writing process, craft, genre and mechanics

Writers’ Workshop All students learn about specific genres Narrative- to tell a story Opinion/ Argumentative- to convince another about an opinion or idea Informational- to research or explain something

Writers’ Workshop What we expect of our writers To stress the importance of the writing process and not just the final product

Writers’ Workshop How to help your child at home: Be a good model Let you child see you write and talk with him/her about how you use writing in your life Provide a journal or diary to record his or her day Don’t write for your child- praise your child’s writing, ignore minor errors

Math- Engage NY The district is currently piloting several math programs For uniformity our school has chosen to pilot one program-Engage NY Engage NY is directly aligned to and written by the authors of the Common Core. It is being adopted by many districts including Berkley, Live Oak, Pajaro Piloting is occurring because CA has not formally adopted any state curriculum The assessments are directly related to the Smarter Balance assessments that the 3rd-5th are taking at the end of the year

Enrichment Programs - Technology Technology 3D animation Mind Craft for 3 rd -5 th grade students Game Design Google Drive/Docs for 2 nd - 5 th grade students Basic computer skills through educational activities for K-1 st grade students Teachers- Irlanda Altamirnano and Natalia Mendoza

Enrichment- Music Every student will receive music enrichment for the academic school year. K- 30 minutes, 1 time a week 1 st -2 nd - 40 minutes, 1 time a week 3 rd - 5 th - 40 minutes, 2 times a week Teacher- Diane Bock

Enrichment - Art Every student will receive art enrichment 1 time a week. Kindergarten- 30 minutes, 1 time a week 1 st -5 th – 40 minutes, 1 time a week Teacher- Karen Adelman **if interested in supporting the art program please see classroom teacher
