Definition: Internet safety is when you are safe and mindful of all the dangers of the internet. Internet safety is also not getting harassed or losing personal information on the Internet.

Facts: One in seven youth receive inappropriate things over the Internet. Two out of five missing children are lost because of the Internet. Half of teens post their pictures on social networking sites. 1 in 8 teens discover that there are predators following them.

Examples: Do not give out any personal information If you feel uncomfortable when on the internet, leave. Never talk to strangers on the Internet. Never give anybody your address in chat rooms.

Definition: A virus is a thing that is designed to make your computer not function the way it was meant to. Viruses can take forms of Worms and also Trojan Horses. There are software, e-mail, and download viruses.

Facts: It is estimated that there are 50,000 different viruses created. Close to all of the computers in the world get infected with some form of virus. One of the most deadly computer viruses ever created was the ILOVEYOU virus.

Examples: Never open E-mail attachments from people you do not know. Don’t download things from unreliable websites. Avoid all shady websites.

Definition: A copyright is a legal protection that is used for creative or original works. Copyrights are covered by the law and if you infringe the copyright, you can be sued.

Facts: Creative works that are copyrighted cannot be copied unless you are the owner. Copyrights are not forever. Copyrights were set up to protect the creators of works They were also set up to encourage creativity.

Examples: If you use a copyrighted item for educational, or other purposes, it can be considered as fair use. To avoid infringement, check to make sure it is fair use or public domain. Copyright can be attained by contacting the U.S. government. Do this to protect your creative works.
