This is a discrete distribution
2
Poisson is French for fish… It was named due to one of its uses. For example, if a fish tank had 260L of water and 13 fish, then on average there are 0.05 fish per litre of water. What is the probability that in a random 10L sample there were 2 fish?
3
There is only one – Lambda Is the rate of occurrance for an event
4
Events cannot occur simultaneously. Occurrences are independent of each other. Events occur at random (unpredictable). For a small interval, the probability of an event occurring is proportional to the size of the interval.
6
A fish tank had 260L of water and 13 fish, then on average there are 0.05 fish per litre of water. What is the probability that in a random 10L sample there were: a) 2 fish b) Less than 4 fish c) At least 1 fish
7
In another fish tank that was 400L in size, it was equally likely to have a random 10L sample with no fish as it was to find a 10L sample with at least one fish. How many fish are in the 400L tank?
