eat-ing dis-or-der noun any of a range of psychological disorders characterized by abnormal or disturbed eating habits (such as anorexia nervosa).

What is an Eating Disorder? Can be long term illnesses needing treatment, can occur with other problems such as depression, substance abuse, and anxiety issues. Eating Disorders can be detrimental to both physical and mental health. Can root from perfectionist personalities, low self esteem, etc.

10% of the Adolescent Girl population has an eating disorder.

Symptoms and Characteristics Experiences unexplained weight loss Refuses to eat most foods Purges right after eating Feels fat when really thin or under- weight Preoccupied with food and weight Has dry, yellow skin with lanugo (soft white hair) Skipping meals Irritable, depressed, tired Exercises Excessively ***Just because a girl isn’t extremely thin doesn’t mean she doesn’t have an eating disorder

Types of Eating Disorders I.Anorexia Nervosa- Having dangerously low body weight, exhibiting an irrational fear of being fat, having a distorted body image, excessively limiting one’s food intake; eating very small non-fattening portions, avoiding meals; weighing constantly. Purging and binging II.Bulimia Nervosa- eating excess and then binging immediately to get “rid” of calories, by purging, excercising, diet pills, etc. III.Binge Eating- bingeing but not purging, compulsively over eating, eating alone or quickly. Eating Disorders and education Eating disorders may cause a drop in grades and inability to focus. As teachers, if we recognize the signs, or are suspicious it is appropriate to contact a counselor. Many with an eating disorder are in denial that they have one so it is important to be careful when approaching the situation.
