2 LEARNING IS POWER Identity fraud involves the use of personal identifying information of a “person” to commit fraud. Ranges from unauthorized use of a credit card or check to a comprehensive takeover of another person’s identity. Result in the loss of assets, creditworthiness, and “good name”.

3 SHARING YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION IS AN INTERNET DANGER Name, date of birth, social security number, address, phone number, driver’s license number, passport number, etc. Financial Identifiers –Credit card numbers, bank account numbers, pins, etc. vast amounts of information readily available

4 SOCIAL MEDIA Letting everyone know when your on vacation Sharing personal information Know who your friends are

5 BANK/CREDIT CARD INFORMATION Giving your credit card information to unknown websites Do these sites have secure banking locks What sites share your information and with who (read fine print)

7 WHY PEOPLE BECOME VICTIMS Post private information Don’t set privacy settings in their social media sites People trust anyone that calls and says they are calling on behalf of….. Throw away important information Carry around their personal information

9 MAIL THEFT –WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR MAIL?

10 HOW TO GUARD AGAINST MAIL THEFT Never send cash or coins in the mail. Promptly remove mail from your mailbox after delivery. Never leave mail in the mailbox overnight. Have the post office hold your mail while you're on vacation or away from home for an extended period. If you don't receive a check or other valuable mail you're expecting, contact the issuing agency immediately. Notify the post office if you change addresses. 11 ON LINE = AT RISK Be aware of what type of games your family members play such as fantasy role playing, war/ shooting games, PC games and most online games allow chat and voice communication - be aware of who they are communicating with ! Virtual Relationships are often predators in disguise – you never know who you are really toying with..

12 SMART PHONES Smart Phones or phones with Wi-Fi access can access all that the Web offers, appropriate or not, the same as if on a computer! Last year we taught families to keep computers in a “ common area ” where there can be over site – Today we have smart phone/computers that go everywhere, anytime – day and night!

14 SMART PHONES Mobile carriers are beginning to offer filtering for the content available on their services, but they have no control over what’s on the Web. Parents of younger kids might want to consider turning off Web access and turning on filtering if they’re concerned about access to adult content.

Identity fraud is the fastest growing crime in the country if not the world not new but technology has streamlined the process vast amounts of information readily available able to secure credit and goods instantaneously through the internet Electronic commerce makes it more difficult to investigate
