ARDENT MEETING Andrej Sipaj June 13 th, 2013
2
ABOUT ME Born and raised in Slovakia Studied: BEng in Mechanical Engineering at UOIT, Canada MASc in Nuclear Engineering (Radiation Science) at UOIT
3
RESEARCH PROJECT Work at AIT, Health & Environment department, Biomedical Systems Enrolled at the Medical University of Vienna, PhD in Medical Physics Development of a heterogeneous, breathing thorax phantom with moveable tumor for treatment planning system verification
4
TRAINING AT AIT
5
TRAINING AT MUV TitleLasers in medicine Advanced radiotherapy techniques Physical fundamentals of radio oncology SupervisorProf, Leitgeb R, Prof. Pircher M. Prof. Dietmar G. Dr. Stock M. DescriptionIntroduction to physics, working principles and medical applications of various kind of lasers Journal club, new trends in radiotherapy including photon/ ion beams delivery techniques, imaging and clinical studies Operational principles of beam delivery units, dosimetry, treatment planning and advanced radiotherapy techniques NoteMandatory first year courses
6
TRAINING AT MUV Visit of the Vienna General Hospital oncology department 100-120 treated patients per day 5 LINACs
7
TRAINING AT MUV Visit of the Vienna General Hospital oncology department 100-120 treated patients per day 5 LINACs
8
PROJECT BACKGROUND Objective: To measure dose of a moving lung tumor (online and offline) in order to validate treatment planning system The tumor is not moving alone in the human body
9
PROJECT BACKGROUND Current state of the art radiation therapy phantoms Limitations Only tumor motionChest wall motion but only 1D tumor motion Metal components CIRS - Dynamic Thorax Phantom RSD - Dynamic Anatomical Respiring Humanoid Phantom
10
RECENT WORK Study of: the current state of the art phantoms and their limitations the commercially available tissue equivalent materials possible lung tumor motion Design based on the beam eye view Solid material appears to be expanding and contracting The tumor moves in 3D Lung expansion motion together with rib cage motion Three tissue equivalent materials used representing soft tissue, bones and lungs Innovative design, never been done before Virtual phantom has been constructed in CAD
11
RECENT WORK Proposal submitted on 3 rd of June for FFG Bridge project Industrial partner: Elimpex (Austrian medical supplies retail and research company) University partner: Medical University of Vienna (Part of the Vienna General Hospital)
12
EXPERIMENTAL WORK MY LAB UP TO NOW
13
FUTURE THINGS TO DO Continuing and finishing design Selection of detectors for photon and ion beam therapy Looking for a collaboration within ARDENT Visiting Durham Regional Cancer Centre (Canada), in a week Meeting with Dr. Anthony Waker, in a week Learning German finally (outside of AIT), August Taking mandatory courses at MUV, September
