2.  Sexual intercourse- the reproductive process in which the penis is inserted into the vagina and through which a new human life nay begin.  Embryo- a developing human, from fertilization through the first 8 weeks of development  Placenta- a blood vessel- rich organ that forms in a mother’s uterus and that provides nutrients and oxygen to and removes wastes from a developing human  Fetus- a developing human, from the start of the ninth week of pregnancy until delivery  Prenatal care- the healthcare provided for a women during her pregnancy

3.  Fertilization- The sperm travels through the uterus and into the fallopian tubes. Only a small fraction of sperm makes it to the egg but it only takes one sperm cell to fertilize the egg  Egg divides- The zygote travels down the women’s fallopian tube toward the uterus. The journey takes about 3 to 5 days. The cell divides into 2 cells then into 4 and then into multiple cells

4.  Embryo Implants- implantation of the embryo occurs, then the female is considered to be pregnant  Placenta supports the baby- the baby’s growth in the uterus is dependent on a placenta.  Most substances including drugs and alcohol can pass through the placenta into the baby.

6.  At 6 weeks the embryo is almost and inch long.  Eyelids and ears are forming.  The tip of the nose can be seen

7.  At 16 weeks the fetus is 5 to 6 inches long and weighs about 5 ounces.  The fetus can yawn, stretch, and even make facial expressions.

8.  At 32 weeks the fetus is about 20 inches long and weighs almost 5 pounds  A layer of fat has formed underneath the skin.

9.  Avoid alcohol and other drugs, including caffeine and tobacco and exposure to cigarette smoke.  Maintain a nutritious diet that follows the food guide pyramid and eat regular meals.  Take prenatal vitamins, prescribed by a healthcare provider, before and throughout a pregnancy  Get regular, moderate levels of exercise, if approved by a doctor  Have all medical conditions evaluated by a doctor early in the pregnancy

10.  Fetal Alcohol Syndrome- a set of birth defects that affect a fetus that has been exposed to alcohol during pregnancy  Miscarriage- death of a fetus from natural complications before the 20 th week of pregnancy  Premature Birth- early birth due to abnormal uterus, bleeding behind placenta, STD, multiple pregnancy, or other causes

11.  Dilation- 1 st stage, the uterus contracts, which causes the cervix to dilate or open up.  Expulsion- 2 nd stage, the baby’s head emerges fully and the shoulders rotate  Placental- 3 rd stage, begins after the delivery of the baby and ends when the uterus expels the placenta and umbilical cord out of the mother’s body.
