What is an aquifer? Any layer of rock or sediment with spaces that hold water, and through which significant quantities of water can move Ex. – Sand and gravel layers – Fracture systems in brittle rocks – Cavities in easily dissolved rock, such as limestone

What is groundwater? Water contained in aquifer Used for drinking, recreation, industry, and growing crops Obtained by digging wells

Confining Layer Geologic material with little or no permeability Water does not pass through this layer or at a rate of movement is extremely slow
