CHALLENGES: Our members are dispersed across a large state, yet mainly concentrated in the Twin Cities metro region. How can we best serve all members, without appearing too “metrocentric”? There are three AIA chapters within the AIA Minnesota component; AIA Minneapolis, AIA St. Paul, and AIA Northern Minnesota: How can we avoid overlapping services and confusion regarding roles and responsibilities for each chapter, as well as the state component? Operational costs can add up for each chapter, negatively affecting dues. How can our dues be structured to accommodate differences in geography and financial means? Members of the Northern Chapter interact with the AIA differently than those who reside in the Twin Cities metro area and other large cities across Minnesota. Emerging professionals often bear the financial burden of student debt, while earning entry level salaries.

SOLUTIONS: Minneapolis St. Paul Northern ENGAGED MEMBERSHIP: One annual AIA Minneapolis board meeting is held in greater Minnesota, recently including, St. Cloud, Mankato and Faribault. All members are encouraged to attend. Annual joint meeting in Brainerd between AIA Northern Minnesota, AIA Minnesota. Also attended by board members from Minneapolis and St. Paul AIA Minneapolis Board strives to include members from beyond Twin Cities metro area; current board includes members from Willmar and Mankato
9
SOLUTIONS: WELL DEFINED ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Local chapters are consistently aligned under the AIA Minnesota component. AIA Minnesota provides advocacy, continuing education, marketing, membership communication, and plans the annual state AIA convention. Local chapters provide member services, networking and information outreach events. Office space and support staff are shared by AIA Minnesota, Minneapolis and St. Paul, increasing cost efficiency and enhancing communication to avoid confusion and overlap. Board structure of all Minnesota components allows participation by members of other chapters in the state and includes AIAS and associate professionals. AIA Minnesota offices

SOLUTIONS: CONSISTENT AND LOGICAL DUES STRUCTURE: Sliding scale for AIA Minneapolis increases State and Local dues over the first six years, making dues more affordable for emerging professionals. Northern chapter does not feature a sliding scale, but dues are weighted toward local because more services are provided at a this level for members of Northern chapter. AIA Minneapolis and AIA St. Paul have an agreement to maintain identical local dues. Percentage of dues paid to local, state and national by AIA Minneapolis Members:
