SYMBOLSIGNEXAMPLE WORDSIGNAn English word in capital letters DEAF stands for and ASL sign (it is called a gloss). The meaning of the sign and the English word may not be the same. fs-fs-BOB fs-COKE “fs-” represents a fingerspelled word ##ALL #DO++ A pound sign (#) indicates a lexicalized sign. -OLD-1 LOOK-AT OPEN-DOOR When the sign glosses are separated by a hyphen, they represent a single sign. +MOTHER+FATHER TIME+4 A plus sign between the sign glosses is used for both compound signs and contractions.

Exclamation marks are used for the emphatic form; the sign s stressed or emphasized. ++DIFFERENT++ TEACH+++ Plus markers after a gloss indicate repetitions of the sign. It is used for habitual or frequentative inflection as well as pluralization. -cont.CRY-cont.The suffix “-cont.” indicates continuous inflection of verbs.

If the word(s) indicate a category, it means you should fill in with signs from that category. (wh)(wh)3 (wh)TREE The symbol “wh” in parenthesis stands for the non-dominant (weak) hand and is used when the sign is made with the non- dominant hand. (2h)(2h)LCL “doors open”(2h) stands for “two- handed” and is used when a commonly one-handed sign is made with both hands.
