2. HEARING CONSERVATION PROGRAM: 1.Work environments shall be surveyed to identify potentially hazardous noise levels and personnel at risk. 2. The use of personal hearing protective devices is considered an interim measure. Engineering control methods must be implemented to attempt to reduce noise levels. 3. Baseline and periodic hearing testing shall be conducted to monitor effectiveness of the program. 4. Education and training, hearing conservation can and should be applied to off duty activities, such as, mowing laws, home repairs, using hand power tools, and many sports activities, such as, hunting, target shooting, race car enthusiast, etc.

4. DEFINITIONS OF NOISE HAZARDOUS: 1. Continuous or intermittent steady state noise of 84 decibels (dBA) or higher. 84 dBA, in general, coincides with conditions that exist when it is difficult to hear a loud voice at a distance of one arm's length. 2. Impact or impulse noise peak of 140-peak sound pressure level (dBA) or higher.

PROTECTIVE MEASURES: 1.All noise hazardous areas and equipment will be prominently marked with an appropriate noise hazardous warning label. 2.Personal protective devices shall be used only after engineering, or administrative controls are determined not feasible. When noise levels reach or exceed 104 dBA, double hearing protection (i.e., inserts plus earmuffs) is mandatory. RESPONSIBILITIES: a. BUMED: 1.Industrial Hygienist (IH) shall conduct noise level surveys of areas, equipment and processes to determine hazards. SUPERVISORS: Supervisors shall: 1.Ensure that personnel are familiar with the various types of hearing protective devices available, which devices are required for specific jobs, and noise hazard warning labels. 2.Enforce the mandatory use of hearing protection devices when required. EMPLOYEE: 1. Use the protective devices when required. 2. Properly maintain hearing protection devices. 3. Report any unsafe conditions.
