Steps to Success Pre-Campaign Be Prepared Learn about United Way’s mission and initiatives by attending Captains’ meetings and at liveunitedtristate.org.liveunitedtristate.org Work with your Campaign Leader to create goals for your area. Connect with your local United Way representative to organize activities, arrange for speakers and get materials. Photograph senior management in LIVE UNITED t-shirts to use when promoting the United Way campaign.

Steps to Success Pre-Campaign Build Enthusiasm Hang posters and balloons throughout the office. Arrange a United Way Volunteer project with your team. Encourage employees to attend a kickoff meeting or event to learn about United Way and the issues that face the community in which you work. Post a schedule of activities and incentives for employees (like casual Fridays for donors). Photograph your team in LIVE UNITED t-shirts and hold a competition for “the new face of United Way.” Send best photos to your local United Way representative. Organize networking and social activities to build teamwork and morale.

Steps to Success During the Campaign Make the ask Emails and packet drop-offs are great, but they are just the beginning; truly successful campaigns require a personal touch. Here is your chance to be creative and get to know your colleagues! Distribute brochures and pledge forms to your department. Give the Leadership Giving guide to those who may make a gift of $1,500 or more. Meet one-to-one with co-workers to talk about United Way. Encourage new employees to give and past donors to increase their gift by $10, $25, $50, or more. Every dollar makes a difference! Lead by example – referencing your own contribution helps make the case. Communicate the goals that you have set for the department. Do not be afraid to re-approach co-workers who haven’t given yet.

Steps to Success Post-Campaign Say “Thank You!” Send an e-mail, letter or handwritten note to donors – it is always appreciated. An inexpensive breakfast (coffee & donuts) is a great way to thank your co-workers. Encourage people to receive year-round eUpdates at liveunitedtristate.org to keep track of the impact of their donation. liveunitedtristate.org

FAQs What exactly does United Way do? United Way works to identify and solve the most critical issues facing our community. We assess community needs, mobilize partners and resources, implement strategies and measure results. Why should I give to United Way rather than to a specific nonprofit agency? Every dollar you give to United Way funds initiatives that are evaluated and measured, assuring that your investment makes the greatest possible impact. How is the money I give to United Way invested? Donations to United Way fund initiatives that improve the Education, Income and Health of our communities. You can choose to target your own investment to one of these initiatives. How do I know that United Way is efficient with my donation? United Way’s overhead costs in the region range from 10 to 18%, which compares favorably with other charities across the nation. United Way leverages funds raised with funding from foundations and government agencies to maximize impact. If someone I know needs help, where do I turn? Residents of New Jersey, Connecticut and parts of New York can dial 2-1-1 to be connected to a specialist who can provide assistance. Residents of New York City should dial 3-1-1 for this service.
