Alka Seltzer Lab
2
Objectives: Today I will be able to: Design and conduct a controlled experiment investigating ways to speed up a chemical reaction Informal assessment: monitoring group discussions as they design and conduct the experiment Formal assessment: Analyzing student procedures, data and conclusions Common Core Connection: Use appropriate tools strategically Attend to precision

Lesson Sequence Day 1 Evaluate: Warm Up Engage/Explore: Pre-Lab Observation Explain: Designing a problem Elaborate: Writing a Procedure Evaluate: Exit Ticket Day 2 Evaluate: Warm Up Engage/Elaborate: Data Collection Elaborate: Conclusion Writing Evaluate: Peer Evaluation Evaluate: Exit Ticket
4
Warm Up (Day 1) What are the steps to the Scientific Method? What does it mean to control an experiment? Why is this important? In a lab setting, how could you measure the rate of a chemical reaction? How would you know that the reaction rate increased?
5
Warm Up (Day 2)
6
Objectives Today I will be able to: Design and conduct a controlled experiment investigating ways to speed up a chemical reaction
7
Homework Study for Scientific Notation Quiz Tomorrow Begin studying for Intro to Chemistry Exam Bring technology to class for Monday’s Lesson
8
Agenda – Day 1 Warm Up Pre-Lab Observation Designing a problem Writing a Procedure Exit Ticket
9
Agenda – Day 2 Warm Up Data Collection Conclusion Writing Peer Evaluation Exit Ticket
10
Pre – Lab Observation
11
Lab Safety Goggles and Aprons must be worn to participate Do not get the Alka-Seltzer tablet wet before beginning the reaction Liquid waste can be disposed of down the drain
12
Brainstorming Designing a Problem
13
Brainstorming How does your family keep food from spoiling quickly? How could you get a solid (like sugar) to dissolve quickly in water? What materials are available to use in the lab? Lab Materials Available Water Beaker Stopwatch Alka-Seltzer (2 tablets) Stirring Rod Hot Plate Mortar and Pestle
14
Write the procedure and design the data table. Both must be approved by the teacher before you may begin collecting data. Procedure
15
Be sure to follow all lab safety rules from the previous day Data Collection
16
Write a conclusion. We will peer evaluate the conclusions using a rubric Conclusion
17
Exit Ticket – Day 1 What variable are you testing in your experiment? How do you plan on controlling your experiment?
18
Exit Ticket – Day 2 What were some errors that you encountered during the lab? If you could do the experiment again what would you change
