3  Option 1: Do you believe in love at first sight? What does this mean about Romeo and Juliet’s relationship?  Option 2: Would you defy your parents to marry someone you love? Why or why not?

4  Complete the handout in pairs.  What is the effect of having such a variety of experiences, feelings, and attitudes about love and marriage in one play?  What are some insights that you gained?  What complications might arise because of these different viewpoints?  In addition to the feud, what are some other problems the young lovers will encounter?  Regarding the topic of love and marriage, with which character do you most identify and why?

9  Rank the three versions of this scene we’ve encountered so far (the text, the ’68 version and the ’96 version) in order of your preference (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd ).  Please discuss  1) Why you liked/didn’t like that particular version  2) Why you think the author/director chose to present this scene the way he did. Who was the intended audience for each?
