USE MANIPULATIVES TO HELP SOLVE! Yellow circles= positive number Red circles = Negative number Zero pair = When a negative (red) and a positive (yellow) cancel each other out. (ex: -1 + 1 = 0) Steps: 1)Set up your 2 sided counters to represent your problem (yellow for every positive, red for every negative) 2) Find any ZERO PAIRS! 3) What’s left? Example: 4 + (-3) =
7
SHOW ME! With your shoulder partner, take turns modeling how to use the 2 sided counters and explain how to solve the following problems: 1)(-2) + (-8) = 2)(-4) + 7 = 3)9 + (-3) = 4)(-6) + (-5) =
8
LETS PRACTICE! (ON YOUR OWN) Use whichever method you prefer 1) 5 + (-3) = 2) -2 + 4 = 3) -4 + (-6) = 4) -12 + 7 = 5) -15 + (-7) =
